Working on disease prevention and developing a proper vaccination protocol tailored to the needs of each farm is the best tool to ensure the future of the beef cattle sector.
This is the general conclusion that more than 70 farmers and veterinarians from Aragón and surrounding areas drew from their presence at the VI Jornada del Pilar, organized by MSD Animal Health on October 8 in Zaragoza.
During the event, new scenarios faced by beef cattle were discussed in this traditional event framed within the Fiestas del Pilar.
Enrique Novales, General Director of Food and Agro-Food Promotion of the Department of Rural Development and Sustainability of the Government of Aragón, was responsible for closing the event by encouraging attendees to focus on prevention.
The director commented on the need to work on improving animal health, clearly focusing on disease prevention, to ensure the sustainability and future of the beef cattle sector. He added that not doing so correctly, without following the requirements established by current legislation, could close the doors to export, which would be a significant negative impact for the sector.
The meeting aligned with MSD Animal Health’s goal of offering quality continuous training, in this case focused on fattening.
Ángel Revilla, Director of the Ruminants Business Unit of MSD Animal Health, welcomed the attendees before introducing the comprehensive technical program of presentations. Laura Elvira, Technical Manager of Ruminants at the company, analyzed the IBR Control Plan, its implications in fattening and export, as well as diagnostic methods and interpretation of results.
Vaccination and a proper vaccination plan are key to preventing diseases like IBR and help minimize viral replication and transmission in the herd, making a proper vaccination plan an effective tool to maintain the sustainability of farms.
José Luis Blasco, Veterinary Technician at MSD Animal Health, spoke about the importance of using anti-inflammatories in the face of bovine respiratory syndrome (BRS).
In this regard, he presented the use of AINE Pour On as an alternative to injectable NSAIDs for reducing pyrexia associated with BRS.
The cycle of presentations was closed by Marta Velázquez, Marketing Manager of Beef Cattle at MSD Animal Health, emphasizing the projects the company has underway regarding beef cattle.
Additionally, the event served to present the second edition of the MSD Animal Health Virtual Congress, which will take place from November 19 to 23. On this occasion, the pioneering online initiative will address in a cross-cutting manner aspects related to animal health in all species.
The company will address the main diseases and their correct diagnosis and prevention, vaccination as the main means of prevention, and the future of meat production. It will do so framed within animal welfare as a key element to ensure the best coexistence and health of animals that guarantees proper food safety.
